A hat designed by Phillip Treacy for Alexander McQueen
Do you have a favorite hat? How do you feel when you try on a hat? What about a hockey, bike or football helmet? How do they transform how you look?
Phillip Treacy is a famous hat designer from Ireland. He's made hats for the runway, the royal family and even the cast of the Harry Potter movies.

A dramatic boat hat. Michael Jackson offered to buy it for 25,000 British pounds but Phillip loved it so much that he didn't sell it even at this exorbitant price!

Naomi Campell wears an orchid inspired hat on the runway.

This Paris Fashion Week SS20 Marni made hats for their menswear show. This one looks like it's made from recycled materials like trash bags!

Virgil Abloh designed a floral hat for his menswear SS20 show for Louis Vuitton.

Activity 1 Sketchbook
1. Draw a picture of one of your favorite hats at home.
2. Research some hats and draw some sketches from famous hat designers. Key words: Phillip Treacy, Marni SS20 menswear, Louis Vuitton SS20 menswear or try this link:
You can also make hats inspired by your favorite movie, book or video game characters.
Which hats would you wear if money were no object?
Activity 2 Make a hat or Crown!
We used Harris Teeter paper bags to make a crown but you could add elements (hot glue with parent help to an existing hat). Cardboard boxes also make great hats just be sure to get help to cut cardboard so you don't accidentally cut yourself.

1. Cut open side of paper bag and flatten.
2. Draw a zig-zag across the bag with a marker.
3. Carefully cut the zig-zag. If you're careful cutting in a single line, you can make more than one crown/hat from a single piece of paper.
4. Draw designs with marker while the paper is flat. You can also glue or tape on magazine pieces, buttons, feathers, sequins or any other supplies you have available. We decided to use marker to keep it simple.
5. Measure around your head to fit the crown. Cut the paper to the correct size (too big is always better since you can overlap the edges to fit.

6. Have an adult help you staple the crown to fit the size of your head. You can also use tape to put the crown together.

Help a younger brother or sister make a crown too or make crowns for your cats and dogs! I outlined designs for my almost 2 and my 3 year old. They stayed busy for a while coloring so this is a good way to keep your siblings busy.

My kids are still in their PJs in these pictures, but take it up a notch by wearing some crazy jewelry or costumes!
Please send me photos of your hat design sketches or photos of you wearing a hat that you designed. Have fun!
Love, Mrs. Thaden
